About Noyyal River:

  • The Noyyal River starts in the Vellingiri hills, part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
  • It travels through several significant locations including Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Karur, and Erode before merging with the Kaveri River.
  • This river is notable for its archaeological sites from the Chalukya and Chola periods, which include ancient storage tanks and check dams.
  • Currently, the Noyyal River faces severe pollution issues. It is heavily contaminated with plastics and sewage, which has greatly degraded its condition.
  • To combat this deterioration, the Central Government has allocated financial assistance for cleaning efforts through the National River Restoration Fund, which is overseen by the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
