Six heritage sites of MP (Madhya Prades)h have been included in the tentative United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) list.
List of Sites included on UNESCO’s Tentative List:
Gwalior Fort:
- Located near Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, this fort stands as a sentinel to the city’s rich past.
- The Gwalior Fort’s history dates back to the 10th century, showcasing a timeline where it was controlled by different dynasties such as the Hunas, Gurjara–Pratiharas, and the Mughals.
- The fort houses several remarkable structures including the Man Mandir Palace, Gujari Mahal, and Sas Bahu temples.
Khooni Bhandara:
- This underground water management marvel is located in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh.
- Built-in 1615 CE by Abdur Rahim Khan-i-Khanan, the Khooni Bhandara is an example of innovative water management influenced by Persian qanat systems.
- Since 2010, there have been concerted efforts to have Khooni Bhandara recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Rock Art Sites of Chambal Valley:
- These sites are spread across the Vindhyan, Satpura, and Kaimur ranges, traversing Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
- The rock art, dating back to the Middle Pleistocene period, covers various historical timelines.
Bhojeshwar Mahadev Temple:
- Positioned in Bhojpur, Madhya Pradesh, this temple is an emblem of medieval Indian architecture.
- Initiated in the 11th century under Paramara king Bhoja, the temple is renowned for its Bhumija style, an advanced form of the Nagara architectural style.
Gond Monuments of Ramnagar, Mandla:
- These monuments reflect the architectural ingenuity of the Gond rulers, with notable structures like Moti Mahal and Begum Mahal.
Historical Ensemble of Dhamnar:
- Located near Dhamnar village, this site encompasses 51 monolithic Buddhist caves and the Dharmarajeshwara Hindu temple complex from the 5th-7th century CE.
