HelpAge India released a report titled “Ageing in India- Exploring Preparedness & Response to Care Challenges” on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15).

Key Findings:

  • Demographic Trends: By 2050, the elderly population in India (aged 60 and above) will constitute 20.8% of the total population, a significant increase from 8.6% in 2011.
  • Work Participation: Currently, only 15% of elderly persons are working, with participation higher among males (24%) than females (7%).
  • Financial Security: Just 29% of elderly people have access to social security schemes.
  • Health Concerns: 54% of all elderly persons suffer from two or more Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
  • Digital Access: 59% of elderly had no access to a digital device.
  • Social Engagement: A mere 7% of elderly were members of social organizations, indicating limited social engagement.
