About Alaknanda River:

  • The Alaknanda River originates from the Alkapuri Glacier at an elevation of 3641m.
    • This glacier combines the snouts of the Bhagirath Kharak and Satopanth glaciers.
  • At its origin, Lake Satopanth, a triangular lake situated at a height of 4402 m, is named after the Hindu trinity: Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva.

Confluence Points (Panch Prayag):

  • Vishnuprayag: Alaknanda meets Dhauliganga.
  • Nandaprayag: Alaknanda meets Nandakini.
  • Karnaprayag: Alaknanda meets Pindar.
  • Rudraprayag: Alaknanda meets Mandakini.
  • Devprayag: Alaknanda meets Bhagirathi; beyond this point, it is known as the Ganga.

Geography and Tributaries:

  • The river rises at the confluence of the Satopanth and Bhagirath glaciers in Uttarakhand.
  • The main tributaries of the Alaknanda River include the Mandakini, Nandakini, and Pindar rivers.
  • It drains parts of Chamoli, Tehri, and Pauri districts.

Cultural Significance:

  • The Hindu pilgrimage center Badrinath is situated along its banks.
  • Tapt Kund, a natural spring, is also located along the river.
