A recent DNA analysis of ancient graves in south-eastern Central Europe has provided insights into Avar societies.
About the Avar societies:
- The Avars were nomadic people originating from Eastern Central Asia and wielded power over eastern central Europe from the 6th to the 9th century CE.
- They are considered successors of the Huns, noted for similarities in their way of life and warfare techniques.
- Avars strictly followed patrilineal descent and practiced limited intermarriage with non-Avar neighbors, placing a higher importance on female-line genealogy to avoid interbreeding.
- They were often hired by the Byzantine Empire to subdue other tribes.
- Among archaeologists, the Avars are renowned for their distinctive belt garnitures.
