About Democratization of Technology (DoT):

  • It refers to the process through which access to technology becomes more widespread across a larger population, encompassing accessibility, affordability, decentralization, skill development, and shared resources.

Significance of DoT:

  • Economic: It enables individuals and small businesses to utilize technology platforms for starting new ventures, innovating, and competing in various sectors, thereby driving economic growth, job creation, and creating new income opportunities.
  • Social: DoT helps bridge digital divides and provides access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and financial services, thus fostering social mobility. An example is the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) offered by NPTEL.
  • Cultural: Platforms like Twitter and Instagram allow diverse communities to express themselves and share cultural content globally.
  • Governance: DoT facilitates enhanced citizen engagement, public discourse, and accountability in governance and decision-making processes, such as using social media for outreach to public service beneficiaries.
