Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti, or Prakash Parv, commemorates the 357th birth anniversary of the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, celebrated on January 17.

About Guru Gobind Singh:

  • Born on December 2, 1666, in Patna, Bihar, Guru Gobind Singh was the son of Guru Tegh Bahadur and Mata Gujri.
  • In 1956, his father was killed by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb for refusing to adopt Islam.
  • In 1676, at the age of 9, he was proclaimed to be the tenth Guru of Sikhs on Baisakhi.
  • Takhat Shri Harimander Ji Patna Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh’s birthplace in Patna, is renowned as a significant Sikh shrine.
  • Guru Gobind Singh was a person of great intellect, known for codifying Sikh law, writing martial poetry and music, and authoring the Sikh scripture ‘Dasam Granth‘ (Tenth Volume).
  • He compiled the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism, and proclaimed himself the last of the personal Gurus before his death in 1708.
  • Guru Gobind Singh’s most notable achievement was the creation of the Khalsa in 1699, introducing the five Ks (Kesh, Kara, Kanga, Kachera, Kirpan) to the Sikh community.
    • The Khalsa symbolized a disciplined and distinct Sikh identity, promoting equality and bravery among its members.

Before his passing, Guru Gobind Singh designated the Guru Granth Sahib (Adi Granth) as the permanent Sikh Guru, ensuring the continuity of spiritual guidance for the Sikh community
