The Central government recently announced its decision to celebrate September 17, as ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’.
About the Liberation of Hyderabad:
- The princely State of Hyderabad was merged into the Indian Union on 17th September, 1948 after police action namely Operation Polo.
- Hyderabad did not get independence for 13 months since India’s Independence on August 15, 1947 and was under Nizam’s rule.
- Hyderabad under the Nizam included current day Telangana, Marathwada region in Maharashtra and Kalaburagi, Bellary, Vijayanagara, Bidar etc. districts of Karnataka.
- Operation Polo is the code name for the military operation conducted by the Indian Armed Forces to integrate this princely state into the independent Union of India.
- It was initiated by the then Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel after Nizam remained indecisive about whether to join India or Pakistan or maintain independence.
- When India gained independence, the Razakars called for Hyderabad state to either join Pakistan or to become a Muslim dominion while resisting its merger with India.
- The people of the region fought valiantly against the atrocities of the Razakars to merge the region into the Union of India.
- The Razakars were a private militia who defended the erstwhile Nizam rule in Hyderabad.
- The military operation was conducted under the leadership of Major General J. N. Chaudhuri.
- The operation was concluded within five days, with minimal resistance from the Nizam’s force, after which the Nizam surrendered.
- The celebration of Hyderabad Liberation Day, would remember the martyrs for its liberation, and infuse the flame of patriotism in the minds of the youth.
