International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)-South Asia Regional Centre (ISARC) will develop rice varieties with low methane emissions and enhance the productivity of premium quality nutritious rice.
- To achieve these goals, ISARC is promoting the adoption of best agronomic and management practices such as Dry Seeded Rice (DSR) and Alternate Wet and Drying (AWD).
About ISARC:
- The ISARC has been established in 2018 through a Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Agriculture Cooperation and Farmers Welfare (DoACFW) of the Government of India and IRRI, Philippines.
- It is located in Varanasi on the campus of the National Seed Research and Training Centre (NSRTC).
- It is dedicated to transforming and strengthening the rice-based agri-food system in the South Asia region by developing and disseminating climate-resilient, stress-tolerant, biofortified and nutritious rice varieties for farmers and consumers.
About IRRI:
- The IRRI is the world’s leading research organization that works on reducing hunger and poverty through rice science.
- It also focuses on improving the health of rice farmers and consumers, and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations.
- It is an independent, nonprofit research and educational institute established in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations, with support from the Philippine government.
- Its headquarters is located in Los Banos, Philippines.
- IRRI-India’s success story commenced with the introduction of the high-yielding rice variety IR8, famously known as “miracle rice.”
- This variety played a pivotal role in averting a major famine in India during the 1960s.
