The Ambubachi Mela, which annually commemorates the menstruation of Goddess Kamakhya or Kameswari, has recently commenced at the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam.
About Kamakhya Temple:
- Known as Kamrup Kamakhya Temple, it is the oldest of 51 Shaktipeeths in India, situated atop Nilachal Hills or Kamagiri.
- The temple is a central hub for the Tantrik Shaktism cult in India and integrates both Aryan and non-Aryan elements of faith and practice.
- Originally built by historical figures like Narakasur, Kaamdev, and Koch king Biswasingha—with the latter’s structure destroyed by Kala Pahar—it was rebuilt in the mid 16th century by Koch king Naranarayan.
