The winners of the 2024 Kavli Prize (not to be confused with the Kavli Medal) were announced.
About Kavli Prize:
- The Kavli Prize was established to honor Norwegian-American businessman and philanthropist Fred Kavli (1927-2013).
- It aims to be similar to the Nobel Prize, recognizing achievements in astrophysics, nanoscience, and neuroscience. The prize is not limited to achievements from the preceding year.
- First Awarded: The inaugural prize was given in 2008. It is awarded every two years.
- Administration: The prize is administered by the US-based Kavli Foundation, the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, and the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research.
- Awards: Each winner receives a $1 million cash prize, a scroll, and a 7 cm diameter medal.
2024 Winners and Their Contributions:
- Astrophysics: David Charbonneau and Sara Seager received the award for their discoveries of exoplanets and their atmospheric characterization.
- Nanoscience: Robert Langer, Armand Paul Alivisatos, and Chad Mirkin were recognized for their breakthroughs in biomedical applications.
- Neuroscience: Nancy Kanwisher, Winrich Freiwald, and Doris Tsao were honored for their work mapping the linkage between facial recognition and the brain.
