Prime Minister unveiled a 125-foot bronze statue of Ahom general Lachit Borphukan at his burial site in eastern Assam’s Jorhat district.

- Lachit Borphukan was born on November 24, 1622, in Charaideo district, Assam.
- He is renowned for his exceptional leadership in the Battle of Saraighat (1671), successfully stopping the Mughal forces from capturing Assam.
- This epic battle took place on the banks of the Brahmaputra in Guwahati.
- The battle stands out as one of the significant naval battles conducted on a river, symbolizing the triumph of the Ahoms over the Mughals.
- His contributions led to the strengthening of India’s naval power and revitalization of inland water transport.
- Lachit Borphukan was a unifier who rallied the tribal forces of Assam, demonstrating outstanding patriotism, leadership, courage, and fearlessness.
- He passed away on April 25, 1672.
- In honour of his valour, the Lachit Borphukan Gold Medal is awarded annually to the top cadet at the National Defence Academy since 1999.
- Lachit Divas is celebrated every year on November 24 to commemorate his memory in Assam.
- In 2022, the Prime Minister honoured his legacy by releasing the book ‘Lachit Borphukan – Assam’s Hero Who Halted the Mughals‘.
