The Manipur Government has recently collaborated with various organizations to protect the Manipuri Pony, or Meitei Sagol.
About Meitei Sagol:
- They are one of the 7 recognized horse and pony breeds in India, characterized by short height, stamina, agility, intelligence, speed, and adaptability to harsh conditions.
- They are the original polo ponies, as Sagol Kangjei of Manipur gave rise to modern polo.
- They are still used in sports like polo and traditional Meitei festivals like Lai Haraoba.
- The 6 other horse and pony breeds are the Marwari Horse, Kathiawari Horse, Zanskari Pony, Spiti Pony, Bhutia Pony, and Kachhi-Sindhi Horse.
