The Indian Army has received its first batch of the indigenous loitering munition suicide drones, Nagastra-1.
About Nagastra-1:
- It is developed by Solar Industries, a subsidiary of Economic Explosives Ltd (EEL) in Nagpur.
- It is operable within a 15-km range, with a maximum flight distance of 30 km.
- It enables kamikaze mode attacks on enemy targets without risking soldier lives.
- Part of the global trend of loitering munitions that began in the 1980s.
- It is the first major indigenously developed kamikaze drone for the Indian Army.
- Enhances indigenous military capabilities, distinct from imports like IAI Harpy and ALS-50 VTOL.
Capabilities:
- Precision: It uses GPS for precision strikes with up to 2 meters accuracy.
- Surveillance: It is equipped with day and night surveillance cameras.
- Warhead: It carries a 1 kg high-explosive fragmenting warhead.
Safety and Recovery:
- Features mission abort, recovery, and reuse through a parachute recovery mechanism.
