- Born on February 10, 1803, Nana Jagannath Shankarseth was a renowned social reformer, educationist, and philanthropist.
- He hailed from a wealthy family in Murbad, Thane district, and took over the family business at a young age after his father’s demise in 1822.
- Inspired by the legendary merchant and philanthropist Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy, Shankarseth made significant contributions to various sectors in Bombay (now Mumbai).
Significant Contributions:
- Education: Shankarseth played a pivotal role in promoting education in Bombay as he donated land for educational institutions and founded the Native School of Bombay, which later evolved into the prestigious Elphinstone College.
- Medical Education: He advocated for the establishment of a medical college in Bombay, leading to the foundation of Grant Medical College, one of the oldest medical institutions in South Asia.
- Museum and Temples: Shankarseth contributed to the promotion of culture and religion by supporting the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum and building temples like Bhawani Shankar Temple and a Ram temple.
- Contribution to Railways: Shankarseth was instrumental in the inception of the Indianrailway system.
- He collaborated with Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy in the committee that facilitated the establishment of the first train route between Boribunder and Thane in 1853.
