A 65-year-old patient from France suffering from Parkinson Plus Syndrome has undergone high cervical spinal cord stimulation at a private hospital in Bengaluru.
About Parkinson Plus Syndrome(PPS):
- PPS, also called atypical parkinsonism, refers to a group of neurodegenerative movement disorders that resemble idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (PD) with certain distinguishing clinical and pathophysiological features.
- Idiopathic means having an unknown cause or mechanism of apparent spontaneous origin.
- Distinctive features of PPS include early-onset dementia, hallucinations, dysautonomia, gaze palsy, myoclonus, pyramidal tract signs, and alien limb phenomenon.
- Common PPS conditions include Lewy body dementia (LBD), multiple system atrophy (MSA), corticobasal degeneration (CBD), and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP).
About Parkinson’s disease:
- Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic brain disorder that affects the nervous system and parts of the body controlled by nerves.
- It causes problems with movement, mental health, sleep, pain, and other health issues.
- Primary symptoms include apraxia, rigidity, bradykinesia, tremor, and postural instability.
PD gets worse over time and there is no cure, but therapies and medicines can reduce symptoms
