Massive fish deaths have recently been reported in a tributary of the Periyar River in Kerala, primarily due to ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, and other toxins in the water.
About Periyar river:
- This perennial and longest river of Kerala passes through the Periyar Tiger Reserve, Periyar Lake (a man-made reservoir created by the dam), Vembanad Lake, and finally into the Arabian Sea.
- It is also known as the lifeline of Kerala.
- It originates from the Sivagiri Hills of the Western Ghats.
- Major tributaries include Muthirapuzha, Mullayar, Cheruthoni, Perinjankutti, and Edamala.
- Major dams on the river are Idukki, Mullaperiyar, and Edamalayar.
- Kaladi, the birthplace of Shankaracharya (propagator of Advaita Philosophy), is located on the bank of the Periyar.
