The report “Global Land Outlook Thematic Report on Rangelands and Pastoralists” was recently released by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
About Rangelands:
- They are natural or semi-natural ecosystems grazed by livestock or wild animals and contain vegetation such as grasses, shrubs, bushes, savannahs, steppes, open forests, and agroforestry systems (land containing trees & crops or pastures).
Significance:
- They play a central role in achieving Land Degradation Neutrality.
- They support livestock production systems, contributing to 16% of global food production.
- They represent one-third of global biodiversity hotspots.
- Their ecosystem services include nutrient recycling, carbon sequestration, freshwater storage, and desertification prevention.
