Recently, President of India conferred Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards (Akademi Puraskar) for the years 2022 and 2023.
About Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards:
- The Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship is the highest honour conferred by Sangeet Natak Akademi without distinction of nationality, race, caste, religion, creed, or sex.
- Also known as the “Akademi Ratna“, it is nation’s highest achievement in music, dance and drama.
- The Akademi Awards are being conferred since 1952.
- The criteria stipulate that individuals below the age of 50 are generally not eligible for this honour.
- The Awards in Hindustani and Carnatic music were instituted as early as in 1951, even before the Akademi was set up and these were known as Presidential Awards.
- The honour of Akademi Fellow carries a purse money of Rupees three lakhs while the Akademi Award carries a purse money of Rupees one lakh, besides a Tamrapatra and Angavastram.
About Sangeet Natak Akademi:
- Sangeet Natak Akademi, the apex body in the field of performing arts in the country, was set up in 1953 for the preservation and promotion of the vast intangible heritage of India’s diverse culture expressed in forms of music, dance and drama.
- The President of India appoints the Chairman of the Akademi for a term of five years.
- In 2006, it introduced annual awards for young artists, known as the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar.
