The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has instructed the Karnataka government to address illegal sand mining in the coastal zone of the Sharavathi river.
About Sharavathi river:
- The Sharavathi, a west-flowing river, originates at Ambutirthha in the Western Ghats and drains entirely within Karnataka into the Arabian Sea.
- Its major tributaries include Nandihole, Haridravathi, Mavinahole, Hilkunji, Yennehole, and Hurlihole.
- Notable for the Jog Falls, the third highest waterfall in India, it is also home to the Sharavati Valley Wildlife Sanctuary.
