The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department and INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage) have recently partnered to preserve an ancient Dutch building near Srikakulam.
Historical Significance of Srikakulam:
- Formerly known as Chicacole before independence, Srikakulam was pivotal during the eras of the Stone Age, Iron Age, and Neolithic era, with notable sites like caves in Nandi Hills, and archaeological sites at Sangamayya Konda and Dannanapeta.
- It served as a strategic location for the Kalinga Dynasty, Gajapati Kingdom, Eastern Chalukyas of Vengi, Kakatiya Dynasty, and Vijayanagara Empire.
Cultural and Historical Sites: The region houses several important sites:
- Buddhist: Salihundam, Kalinga Patnam, Dabbaka Vaani Peta, Nagari Peta, Jagati Metta, Singupuram.
- Hindu: Arasavilli (one of the two sun temples in India), Srimukhalingam, Srikurmam.
- Jain: Sites in Tangamayyakonda and Rottavalasa villages.
