About Super Blue Moon:

  • A Super Blue Moon is a combination of a Supermoon and a Blue Moon.
  • It occurs when the Moon is near its closest point to Earth (perigee) while being full, making it a Supermoon.
  • For the Moon to be classified as a Blue Moon, it can either be a monthly blue moon (when two full moons appear in one month) or a seasonal blue moon (when four full moons occur within a single astronomical season).

About Super Moon:

  • A Supermoon happens when the full moon coincides with the Moon’s closest approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit, known as perigee.
  • During a Supermoon, the Moon can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical full moon.
  • Approximately 25% of all full moons are Supermoons.

About Blue Moon:

  • A Blue Moon is a relatively rare event, defined in two ways:
    • Monthly Blue Moon: When two full moons occur within a single calendar month.
    • Seasonal Blue Moon: When there are four full moons in an astronomical season instead of the usual three.
  • Only about 3% of full moons are Blue Moons.
  • Despite its name, a Blue Moon doesn’t actually appear blue in color; the term refers to its rarity. However, atmospheric conditions can sometimes cause the Moon to take on a bluish hue.
