The Report on Deforestation titled “Raising Ambition, Accelerating Action: Towards Enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions for Forests” was released by UNEP.
Key highlights of the Report on Deforestation:
- Emissions Increase: The report highlights that emissions from deforestation have escalated in Latin America and the Caribbean since the 2021 Glasgow Declaration.
- Brazil’s Progress: Brazil shows a positive trend, with a 22% annual decrease in deforestation rates, standing out as an exception.
- Inadequate Targets: Many nations lack comprehensive forest protection goals in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), with only eight of the top 20 deforestation countries setting clear reduction objectives.
- Annual Emissions: Countries affected by tropical deforestation emitted an average of 5.6 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually from 2019 to 2023.
Major Causes of Deforestation:
- Agricultural Demand: The need for agricultural land, driven by global demands for products like oil palm, soybean, and beef, continues to be a leading cause of forest loss.
- Policy Shortfalls: Inadequate national policies and misaligned objectives within NDCs significantly contribute to ongoing deforestation.
Recommended Actions to Combat Deforestation:
- Strengthen NDCs: There is a crucial need to improve and align forest-based measures within NDCs to more robust national policies.
- Implement Carbon Pricing: Raising carbon prices to $30-50 per tonne could incentivize forest conservation.
- Community Involvement: Empowering local communities and indigenous peoples by recognizing their rights to forest land and carbon is essential.
- Law Enforcement: Increasing enforcement against illegal deforestation, especially on indigenous lands, is recommended.
- COP30 Opportunity: The upcoming COP30 conference presents a critical opportunity to set measurable and concrete forest protection targets in future NDC submissions.
