About Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.):

  • Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) is a tropical, perennial crop originating from the Amazon region of South America.
  • It is widely known for its importance in chocolate production. Cocoa is grown in the humid tropics, particularly around the equator between 20° latitude north and south.
  • Approximately 70% of the world’s cocoa beans are sourced from four West African countries: Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon.

Uses:

  • Cocoa is primarily used for manufacturing chocolates. It is also processed to produce cocoa powder, cocoa butter, and cocoa liquor, which are essential for confectionery and cosmetics.
  • Additionally, cocoa products are used in beverages, pharmaceuticals, and personal care items.

Climatic Requirements:

  • Rainfall: Requires an average annual rainfall of 1250-3000 mm, with most of it distributed throughout the year.
  • Temperature: Thrives in a temperature range of 15°C to 39°C, with an optimal temperature of about 25°C.
  • Soil: Prefers deep, well-drained soils, particularly clay loam and sandy loam. It grows best in soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.0.
  • Other Conditions: Cocoa can withstand flooding but is intolerant of stagnant or waterlogged conditions. It is usually cultivated as an under-storey crop, requiring about 50% shade in plantation environments.

Production:

  • Cocoa is grown up to 300 meters above sea level.
  • In India, it is primarily cultivated in the southern states of Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, often as an intercrop with Arecanut and Coconut.
  • Globally, Africa dominates cocoa production, with 70% of the world’s cocoa beans produced in West African nations such as Ivory Coast and Ghana.
